Pavel Popovich was the fourth cosmonaut to go into space - as the pilot of Vostok 4 on a three day mission launched 1962 Aug 12. Vostok 4 flew alongside Vostok 3.
He also commanded Soyuz 14 on a visit to the Salyut 3 space station 1974 July.
Born 1929 Oct 5, he was a few days short of his 80th birthday.
