| Luna 9 & The British Interplanetary Society
The British Interplanetary Society commemorated the successful mission of Luna 9 by commissioning a silver model of the lander on the lunar surface. It was presented to the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1966.
This cutting is taken from the BIS magazine Spaceflight - the 1966 October issue - it appears on page 375.
![]() In 2008, while visiting the office of the late Academician Mstislav Keldysh in Moscow some forty two years later, I came across the model. Keldysh was Chairman of the Academy of Sciences at the time of the presentation which explains how it ended up there. It is hallmarked as pure silver - the stampings appear at the front edge of the lunar surface. ![]() |
